Gastroenterology is the discipline dealing with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (oesophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas). We are interested primarily on those states, associated with abdominal pain, indigestion, changes of bowel habit or bleeding from the digestive system and on states, connected with jaundice and elevated liver tests.
Preparation consists of obligation from eating , drinking and smoking from midnight a day before the procedure.
Endoscopic examination of the upper part of gastrointestinal tract - oesophagogastroduodenoscopy
Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy is an endoscopic examination of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. It is performed b a flexible probe with diameter of 10 - 12 mm (endoscope). Video is transmitted over by optical fibres or by electronics. Only modern electronic video endoscope is in use at our unit. The actual testing takes approximately 15 minutes, but depends on the nature of medical finfing.
Colonoscopy
The examination (performed after suitable cleaning of the colon) consists of viewing of the colon, or - in the case of need - of the sigmoideoscopy of the left half of the colon, with a flexible endoscope. Examination allows direct display of the intestine´s mucous membrane, when the physician under the supervision of sight penetrates gradually from the rectum up to the beginning of the colon, wherein the colon is inflated by air to better display the mucous surface. In case of pathological finding it is possible to take a tissue sample for histological assessment or eventual removal of polyps with the endoscopic loop. For better tolerance the examination can also be performed by using the s.c. pre-medication with pharmaceuticals, suppressing the consciousness and pain.
Preparation:: One week before the examination follow a residue-free diet (i.e. food without husks, seeds or cereals). The day before the examination only a residue-free breakfast, than for lunch just soup. The same day from 4 pm to 8 pm drink prescribed medication (e.g. Fortran) with total 4 litres of water (1 l per hour). When coming to the examination to submit fresh (i.e. not older than 14 days) document on blood counts and coagulation parameters. Detailed information can be obtained at information meeting about 1 week prior to colonoscopy. You can arrange at this meeting on telephone number 973 212 428 (the meeting takes about 15 minutes).
Endosonography - Endoscopic ultrasound examination of internal organs.
Endosonography is performed using a flexible device with optical fiber (endoscope) at the end is placed the ultrasonic probe.
This way we can examine the organs and formations in the wall or in the area of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. In this case the device introduces through the mouth in the left lateral position. Before the examination is necessary at least eight hours not to eat, drink only clear liquids until four hours before the examination, do not smoke.
Another possibility is the examination of formations and organs in the intestine or near the end portion of the colon. In this case the device is introduced into the rectum with the local anesthetic. Before the examination is necessary to prepare intestines laxative solution or clysma.
During the examination, the doctor can make a biopsy, ie. take samples of tissue or fluid for the purpose of further laboratory examination.
